Data annotation and AI training label jobs represent a real category of remote work used by technology companies to train machine learning models. Scammers have adopted this legitimate work category as a cover for Telegram-based task fraud because it is credible, difficult to disprove without technical knowledge, and appeals to people with no specialist skills.
The Telegram format is effective for this scam type because group channels can simulate a thriving workplace community, with fake colleagues sharing completed tasks, earnings screenshots, and positive testimonials. New recruits see an apparently active community of workers before they deposit anything.
The fraud follows the same structural pattern as other Telegram task scams: initial payment, then escalating cryptocurrency deposits required to continue and to withdraw a growing but fictional balance.
How this scam works on Telegram
A Telegram contact or group introduces a data annotation platform that claims to provide AI training labels for technology companies. The initial tasks are described as simple: categorise images, tag objects, rate responses, or label audio clips. A small commission is paid for each completed batch.
After demonstrating the system works with small payouts, the platform introduces higher-paying 'specialist task sets' that require a cryptocurrency deposit to activate — framed as a performance bond or platform collateral. Completed tasks grow the visible balance, but withdrawal requests trigger additional deposit requirements described as taxes, upgrade fees, or withdrawal processing charges.
The annotation platform and task dashboard are entirely fabricated. No AI company receives any labelling work. The balance shown cannot be withdrawn under any circumstances.
Common red flags
- Platform only accessible through Telegram or a link shared exclusively within Telegram
- Cryptocurrency deposit required to unlock higher-paying task categories
- Withdrawal of earnings blocked by escalating fees each time it is attempted
- Work tasks do not connect to any identifiable real-world AI company or research project
- Community in the Telegram group appears uniformly positive with no questions or complaints
- Platform name is not findable through independent research on AI or data labelling industry sites
How to protect yourself
- Treat any data annotation platform that requires cryptocurrency deposits to unlock tasks as fraud
- Verify any data annotation employer through legitimate freelance platforms (Appen, Scale AI, Remotasks) rather than Telegram
- Real AI data labelling jobs are posted on established freelance and gig work platforms with verified company profiles
- Never interpret a rising dashboard balance as real money until a successful withdrawal has been completed
- Exit and report the Telegram group as soon as a deposit is requested
How to report it
- Report the Telegram group and linked platform to Telegram under 'Fake or Scam'
- File a cryptocurrency fraud report with IC3 at ic3.gov (US) or your national cybercrime authority
- Notify your contacts who may have been invited to the same group
