Fake Service Canada CPP Disability Fraud Investigation Scam
Criminals impersonate Service Canada to target Canada Pension Plan Disability and Employment Insurance Sickness benefit recipients, claiming an anonymous fraud complaint has been filed and that benefits will be cancelled unless the claimant verifies medical and financial details immediately.

Last reviewed: 8 June 2026
Service Canada administers Canada Pension Plan Disability (CPPD) benefits and Employment Insurance Sickness benefits for Canadians who cannot work because of severe and prolonged disability or illness. Scammers target these claimants specifically because the threat of losing disability income is extremely effective at producing fearful, rapid compliance.
A message or call claiming to be from a 'Service Canada Benefit Integrity Unit' states that an anonymous report has been received alleging the recipient is capable of working, that CPPD payments have been placed on a 24-hour review hold, and that benefits will be permanently cancelled unless the claimant confirms their medical details and banking information immediately.
Service Canada's genuine benefit integrity processes involve formal written communications, provide substantial notice, and include clear rights to appeal and representation. No genuine review begins with a surprise call demanding immediate payment or online identity verification.
How this scam works on the Service Canada brand
A robocall or caller says: 'Service Canada Benefit Integrity: An anonymous report was received about your CPP Disability account. Your payments are suspended pending review. To prevent cancellation, press 1 to speak with an officer.' The 'officer' asks for SIN, date of birth, medical diagnosis details, and banking information.
Texts read: 'Service Canada: Your CPP Disability payments are under review. Verify your medical status at: [link] within 24 hours or payments will be cancelled.' The link leads to a fake Service Canada portal collecting credentials and health information.
Health information collected in these scams is particularly sensitive — it can be used to commit medical identity theft, apply for fraudulent prescriptions, or access private health records.

Frequently asked questions
How does a genuine CPP Disability benefit review work?
Service Canada sends a formal written notice to your address of record when a Continuing Eligibility Review is scheduled. You are given time to provide medical documentation and have the right to a fair hearing and appeal. No review begins with an unexpected phone call.
Can medical information given to a scammer be used against me?
Yes. Medical identity theft is a growing problem. Fraudsters can use your diagnosis details and health card number to make fraudulent insurance or prescription claims. Treat health information with the same caution as financial data.
What disability advocacy resources are available in Canada?
Legal Aid offices in each province can provide advice on CPP Disability appeals. The Income Security Advocacy Centre (ISAC) in Ontario and Disability Alliance BC offer free guidance. Community Legal Clinics can assist with responding to any genuine review notice.
