Fake Game Marketplace Scams on Twitch
Fraudulent game item traders use Twitch streams and chat to find buyers for non-existent or misrepresented in-game items, collecting payment through non-reversible methods before delivering nothing.

Twitch's large gaming audience creates a natural market for in-game item trading, and fraudsters exploit this by promoting item sales in chat or through affiliated Discord servers linked from Twitch profiles. The perceived credibility of a Twitch account with followers makes buyers more willing to transact.
Because Twitch profiles often carry linked social accounts and streaming history, a fraudulent trader can appear to have a substantial legitimate presence that they have built specifically for this fraud.
How this scam works on Twitch
A Twitch streamer or chat participant promotes in-game items for sale at below-market prices, directing interested buyers to a Discord, website, or direct messaging channel to complete the transaction.
Payment is requested via a non-reversible method before item transfer. After receiving payment, the seller claims a technical problem with the transfer and then stops responding, or delivers a significantly inferior item than described.
Some operators stream themselves apparently trading legitimate items to build a reputation, then exit-scam when a significant high-value transaction is staged with a victim.
Common red flags
- Chat promotion of in-game item sales by unknown accounts
- Below-market prices for high-demand game items
- Seller who insists on payment before completing the item transfer
- Transaction moved away from Twitch to an unverifiable channel
- Chargeback-resistant payment methods required for the transaction
- Seller who goes offline immediately after receiving payment
How to protect yourself
- Use only officially endorsed trading platforms or the game's own marketplace for item transactions
- Verify a seller's trading history through the game's own reputation system rather than Twitch follower count
- Use escrow services endorsed by the official game community — not those proposed by the seller
- Check a seller's accounts for trading history across multiple platforms
- Never pay for in-game items through payment methods with no buyer protection
How to report it
- Report the Twitch account via the in-app report function
- Report the fraud to the game publisher's trust and safety team
- File a report with your payment provider if funds were transferred
Frequently asked questions
Can I trust game item sellers I find through Twitch streams?
Twitch follower count and streaming history are not reliable indicators of trading trustworthiness. Always use official game trading systems or community-endorsed escrow services, and never pay before receiving the item.
