Because every business owner wants their Google Business Profile listing verified and trustworthy, scammers borrow Google's logos and terminology to make fake verification demands feel like an official requirement rather than a scam.
How this scam works on the Google Business Profile brand
A business owner receives an email, text, or phone call claiming to be from Google Business Profile support, stating their listing is at risk of suspension unless they 'reverify' their business by clicking a link, paying a fee, or providing a code sent to their phone. The email may closely mimic Google's real design, including logos and formatting, and link to a lookalike page that harvests the owner's Google account login instead of an official google.com domain.
A phone-based version has a caller claiming to be from the 'Google verification team,' asking the owner to read back a verification code just texted to them — that code is actually Google's real account recovery code, and reading it aloud hands the scammer access to take over the owner's Google Business Profile listing, which they then edit to redirect calls, change the address, or hold for ransom.
Common red flags
- Any request to read back a verification code you didn't personally request
- Emails claiming to be Google Business Profile that link to a non-google.com domain
- Claims that your listing will be suspended within hours unless you act immediately
- Requests for payment to 'verify' or 'expedite' your Google Business Profile listing
- Phone callers claiming to be Google support who ask for remote access to your computer
- Poor grammar or formatting inconsistent with Google's actual communications
How to protect yourself
- Never read a verification code aloud to anyone who calls you, even if they claim to be from Google
- Manage your Google Business Profile only through the official Google Business Profile website or app
- Verify any suspension or verification notice by logging into your account directly, not through email links
- Google Business Profile verification is free; never pay a third party to verify or expedite your listing
- Enable two-factor authentication on the Google account tied to your business listing
- Check the sender's email domain carefully for any Google-related communication
How to report it
- Report suspicious activity directly through Google Business Profile's official Help Center
- Report phishing emails to Google at [email protected]
- File a complaint with the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov
- If your listing was hijacked, use Google's business profile ownership recovery process to reclaim it
Frequently asked questions
Does Google ever charge to verify a Business Profile?
No, Google Business Profile verification is free. Any request for payment to verify, expedite, or 'protect' your listing is not coming from Google.
What should I do if someone calling as 'Google support' asks me to read a code?
Hang up immediately. That code is almost certainly your real Google account recovery code, and sharing it lets the caller take over your account and business listing.
