A phone call feels more personal and urgent than an email, which is exactly why scammers running the fake Google verification scam prefer to call small business owners directly rather than only sending messages.
How this scam works on Phone Calls
The scammer calls claiming to represent Google's business verification or support team, often using caller ID spoofing to display a plausible-looking number. They tell the owner their listing has been flagged, is missing information, or will be suspended, creating urgency to act on the call itself. They may ask the owner to open their Google Business Profile dashboard while on the phone and 'confirm' details, subtly steering them toward a verification code that Google is simultaneously texting to the owner's phone as part of a real account-recovery attempt the scammer triggered.
Because the call is happening live and the caller sounds knowledgeable about the listing (having likely looked it up publicly beforehand), owners are more easily walked through a live process, including installing remote-access software or reading back one-time codes, than they would be responding to a static email. Some calls end with a request for a card payment to 'reactivate' or 'boost' the listing.
Common red flags
- An unsolicited call claiming your Google Business listing needs urgent action
- Caller asks you to read back a numeric code sent to your phone during the call
- Request to install remote-access or screen-sharing software
- Request for a credit card payment to 'verify,' 'boost,' or 'reactivate' your listing
- Caller ID shows a number that doesn't match Google's known support channels
- Pressure to act immediately during the call rather than verify independently and call back
How to protect yourself
- Hang up on any unsolicited call claiming to be Google support about your business listing
- Never read a verification code aloud to a caller under any circumstances
- Never install remote-access software at the request of an unsolicited caller
- Manage and verify your listing only by logging into Google Business Profile directly
- If concerned, look up Google's official support contact yourself rather than trusting the caller's number
- Warn employees who might answer such calls to hang up and alert the owner
How to report it
- Report the phone number to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov
- Report suspicious activity through Google Business Profile's official Help Center
- File a complaint with your phone carrier if the number is spoofing a legitimate line
- Report to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3.gov) if money or account access was lost
Frequently asked questions
Does Google make outbound calls about Business Profile verification?
Google does not typically place unsolicited calls demanding immediate verification action or codes; treat any such call as suspicious and verify independently through your account.
What should I do if I already read a code to a caller?
Immediately log into your Google account, change your password, review recent account activity, and remove any unfamiliar devices or recovery options, since the caller may now have access.
