Instagram's visual feed lets fake grant schemes look polished and aspirational: screenshots of 'approved' payouts, testimonials with smiling faces, and a profile styled as a helpful 'grant agent'. The platform's culture of curated success makes a flashy claim of free money feel achievable.
Genuine grant programmes are not run through Instagram accounts or DMs, and they never charge fees to release funds. Scammers exploit the platform's reach, hashtags, and direct messaging to seed offers and then move interested users into private chats where the extraction begins.
How this scam works on Instagram
You may see a post or story promoting government grants or 'relief funds', or receive a DM from an account claiming to be a grant agent who can get you approved. Comment sections are often seeded with fake success stories.
The DM moves to a request for personal and banking details and an upfront 'processing' or 'insurance' fee to release the grant. Forged approval images and screenshots of others' 'winnings' are used to build trust.
Accounts are frequently hacked or impersonated, so an offer may appear to come from someone familiar, lowering the victim's guard before fees and data are taken.
