Telegram's channel infrastructure is well suited to fake government grant campaigns: an operator can create a channel that mimics the visual identity of an official agency and send mass messages to users in a region. Because Telegram channels can have unlimited subscribers and are easily discoverable, a convincing fake government channel can attract genuine victims through organic searches.
The scale of Telegram-based grant fraud means a single campaign can target thousands of people in a very short time, making rapid reporting essential to limit harm.
How this scam works on Telegram
A Telegram channel posts regular updates mimicking official government communications — policy announcements, public health messages, and then a notification that a new emergency grant scheme is accepting applications. Members are directed to a bot that collects personal details and bank account information.
The bot guides the victim through a simulated application process, including uploading ID documents, before informing them that a small 'application security deposit' is required. After payment, the bot thanks the victim and provides a fake reference number — no grant ever arrives.
Some campaigns use Telegram's 'Nearby People' feature to target users in specific geographic areas, making the grant claim appear hyper-local and relevant.

Frequently asked questions
Why do fake government grant channels on Telegram attract so many subscribers?
Operators use paid promotion, cross-posting in legitimate community groups, and search-optimised channel names to attract subscribers. They also build trust by posting genuine government news for weeks before activating the fraud. Subscriber count alone does not indicate legitimacy.
