How grant impostors push instant Zelle 'processing fees' for an award that will never be paid.

In the Zelle version of the fake government grant scam, an 'agent' claims the victim qualifies for a substantial award and must send a small Zelle processing fee first. The instant bank-to-bank transfer is framed as the fastest way to release the grant.
Zelle moves money in seconds and payments to the wrong person are generally irreversible, which is why scammers prefer it. Real government grants never require a Zelle fee, and any such request is fraudulent.
How this scam works on Zelle
The victim is contacted by phone or message and told a five-figure grant is approved, pending a Zelle fee sent to a personal handle. The agent stresses urgency before the 'grant window' closes.
The payment lands instantly in a mule account and is moved on. The agent then claims the transfer needs verification and requests a second Zelle payment.
The grant never arrives. Because the funds went to a personal Zelle account, recovery is very difficult once the transfer clears.

Frequently asked questions
Is a government grant fee ever paid by Zelle?
No. Legitimate grants require no upfront fee at all, let alone an instant Zelle payment to a personal handle. Any request to Zelle a fee to claim a grant is a scam. Verify programs through official government websites.
