Fake Airbnb Off-Platform Payment and Verification Scam
Fraudulent hosts or impersonators ask Airbnb guests to complete payment or identity verification outside the Airbnb platform, stealing money or credentials.

Airbnb's platform is designed to keep all payments and communications within the app and website, providing both guests and hosts with protection. Scammers operating fraudulent listings or impersonating Airbnb attempt to move guests off the platform precisely to eliminate those protections.
The off-platform payment request is one of the most common Airbnb-related frauds. A 'host' — who may be operating a fake listing or who has gained access to a legitimate host's account — contacts a prospective guest and offers a lower rate if they pay directly by bank transfer, wire, or through an external payment app. Once the payment is made outside Airbnb, it falls outside Airbnb's AirCover protection, and the victim has little recourse when no property is available on arrival.
A separate variant involves fraudsters impersonating Airbnb's customer service team, sending emails from non-Airbnb domains claiming there is an issue with the guest's booking or identity verification that must be resolved by clicking a link.
How this scam works on the Airbnb brand
On the legitimate Airbnb platform, all payment is processed through Airbnb's secure checkout. Hosts do not have access to guests' card details and cannot request payment outside the platform. Any host who sends a message asking for a direct bank transfer or an external payment is violating Airbnb's policies — and is almost certainly running a scam.
Fake identity-verification requests typically arrive as emails from domains resembling airbnb.com but with slight variations. They claim the guest's account has been flagged for verification and ask them to upload ID documents or re-enter payment information through an external link. Airbnb does have a genuine identity verification process, but it is conducted within the Airbnb app or website — not through external links sent by email.
Some scammers create fake listings with attractive photos stolen from legitimate properties. The listing exists on Airbnb long enough to attract an inquiry, at which point the 'host' moves the conversation to external channels to collect a direct payment before the listing can be reported and removed.
Common red flags
- A host requests payment outside of Airbnb — by bank transfer, PayPal, or any method other than Airbnb checkout
- A host or 'Airbnb support agent' sends a link to a URL that is not airbnb.com for verification or payment
- The listing price is substantially lower than comparable properties in the same area
- The host moves the conversation from Airbnb's messaging system to external WhatsApp, email, or text
- The listing has very few or no reviews, or uses photos that appear on other websites when reverse-image searched
- An email claiming to be from Airbnb Support uses a domain other than @airbnb.com
How to protect yourself
- Always book and pay exclusively through the Airbnb website or app — Airbnb's AirCover protection only applies to on-platform transactions
- Reverse-image-search listing photos using Google Images or TinEye to verify they are not stolen from another property
- If a host asks you to pay or communicate outside Airbnb, report the listing immediately using the 'Report listing' function
- Contact Airbnb Support only through the Help Centre at airbnb.com/help — not through phone numbers or email addresses in unsolicited messages
- Enable two-factor authentication on your Airbnb account
How to report it
- Report suspicious listings using the 'Report listing' option visible on any Airbnb listing page
- Contact Airbnb Support directly via airbnb.com/help to report off-platform payment requests or suspected fraudulent hosts
- Report phishing emails impersonating Airbnb to your email provider and to your national cybercrime authority
- If you paid outside the platform and lost money, contact your bank immediately and report to the FTC or your national equivalent
Frequently asked questions
A host messaged me offering a discount if I pay outside Airbnb. Is this safe?
No. This is one of the most common Airbnb scams. If you pay outside the platform, you lose Airbnb's AirCover protection. Report the host immediately using Airbnb's reporting tool.
I received an Airbnb verification email asking me to re-enter payment details. Should I do it?
Do not click the link. Log in to Airbnb directly at airbnb.com and check your account for any genuine verification requests. Airbnb will not ask you to re-enter payment details via an unsolicited email link.
What is AirCover and does it protect me if I pay outside Airbnb?
AirCover is Airbnb's built-in protection programme covering major issues like listings that do not match their description. It only applies to bookings made through the Airbnb platform. Off-platform payments fall entirely outside this protection.
