Immigration anxiety is a powerful lever, and WhatsApp delivers it straight into a personal chat. For migrants, students, and visa holders, a message claiming a problem with their status — sent to the same app they use to call family abroad — can feel terrifyingly plausible and immediate.
Genuine immigration departments do not manage cases or collect fees through WhatsApp. The platform is favoured by scammers because it reaches people internationally, supports multiple languages, and uses disposable numbers that cannot be traced back to any real office.
How this scam works on WhatsApp
The message claims there is an issue with your visa, residency, or application — a missing fee, a flagged document, or an order pending against you. It often arrives with an official-looking emblem and a case reference to seem credible.
Using WhatsApp's instant chat, the scammer pressures you to pay a 'fine', 'reinstatement fee', or 'expedite charge' to avoid cancellation or deportation, and to send copies of your passport and visa to 'verify your file'.
The documents you share enable identity theft, while the fees vanish. Threats of detention or removal are used to keep you paying and to discourage you from checking with the real authority.
