Telegram's privacy and username-based identities make it a natural home for fake investor scams, particularly in startup, crypto, and funding communities. A scammer can present an investor persona with little to verify behind it, then move a target into a one-to-one chat to advance the supposed deal.
Businesses active in these communities may expect investor interest to surface there, which the scam exploits. The absence of meaningful verification behind a Telegram identity is the core weakness that lets a fabricated investor introduce fees and data requests with apparent legitimacy.
How this scam works on Telegram
The scammer engages a business through a Telegram group or direct message, posing as an investor interested in funding it. They reference a plausible fund or portfolio and build a businesslike rapport to appear credible.
As the supposed deal proceeds, they introduce costs framed as routine: due-diligence fees, legal or escrow charges, or payments to a provider they control, while requesting sensitive financial details. The promise of capital is used to justify each request.
After fees are paid or data is shared, the funding does not materialise and the account stops responding or demands more. Because Telegram identities can be changed or abandoned, recovering funds or tracing the operator is difficult.
Common red flags
- An investor reachable only through a Telegram username
- A demand to pay fees in order to receive investment
- A fund or portfolio that cannot be independently confirmed
- Requests for sensitive financial data early in the process
- Pressure to commit before a funding window supposedly closes
- Payments directed to a provider the investor insists on
How to protect yourself
- Verify the investor and fund through independent, official sources
- Refuse to pay any fee to receive investment
- Treat username-based investor identities as unverified
- Withhold sensitive financial data until verification is complete
- Consult a qualified adviser before paying any process cost
- Be wary of urgency around a funding deadline
How to report it
- Report the account using Telegram's in-app reporting feature
- File a report with your national fraud or cybercrime authority
- Notify your bank or payment provider if any fee was paid
Frequently asked questions
Is investor interest in a Telegram startup group trustworthy?
Treat it with caution. Telegram identities are based on usernames that can be changed or discarded, so verify any investor and fund independently. Genuine investors do not ask you to pay fees to receive their money.
