Telegram-based jury duty scams use the platform's anonymous messaging to reach victims with official-sounding threats. Because Telegram does not require a verifiable identity to create a convincing-looking account, operators can pose as court clerks, federal marshals, or police officers and contact victims directly from numbers that display professional display names.
The scam is effective in jurisdictions where jury service is a legal obligation, as the threat of an arrest warrant carries real weight and prompts payment before the victim thinks to verify.
How this scam works on Telegram
A Telegram DM arrives from an account named after a court or law enforcement agency. The message references a case number and states that the recipient missed a jury service date. A fine must be paid within two hours via a linked payment page, after which the warrant will be 'administratively cancelled'.
The operator may send Telegram voice notes in a formal, official tone to add authority. Victims who pay the initial fine are contacted again with additional 'court fees' or 'processing charges'. The Telegram account becomes unreachable once the victim stops paying or reports the fraud.
Some variants reference real court names and real case number formats to make the threat harder to dismiss on first impression.

Frequently asked questions
Should I call the number given in the Telegram message to verify the jury duty claim?
No. Only contact your local courthouse using a number you have found independently — from the official court website or a verified directory. The number provided in the Telegram message connects to the fraudster's accomplices.
