Instagram's visual, portfolio-like feed makes it a natural place for real modeling and content-brand scouting to happen, and that legitimacy is exactly what scammers borrow when they DM aspiring creators with a scouting offer that requires payment before any actual deal is signed.
How this scam works on Instagram
A scammer messages an Instagram user directly, complimenting their photos or content and claiming to represent a modeling agency, clothing brand, or content platform interested in a paid collaboration. Before any contract or real payment is discussed, the target is told they need to pay an upfront 'portfolio processing fee,' cover shipping costs for sample products, or purchase a 'starter kit' to be considered for the deal.
Once the fee is paid, the promised contract, product shipment, or continued communication either never materializes or is followed by requests for further fees, such as a 'photographer booking fee' or 'agency registration cost.' Because real scouting and brand partnerships genuinely do start through Instagram DMs, and because the scammer's message is often personalized and flattering, the pitch can feel far more credible than a cold, generic spam message.
Common red flags
- Unsolicited DM claiming to represent an agency or brand, requesting an upfront fee before any contract
- Fee is framed as 'portfolio processing,' shipping, or a 'starter kit' purchase
- No verifiable agency or brand presence outside the DM conversation itself
- Additional fees are requested after the first payment for further steps in the 'deal'
- Reluctance to provide a real contract, business registration, or verifiable point of contact
- Heavy flattery combined with urgency to accept the offer quickly
How to protect yourself
- Legitimate modeling and brand deals do not require upfront payment from the talent — payment flows to the creator, not from them
- Verify any agency or brand's independent website, registration, and reputation before engaging further
- Ask for a written contract and have it reviewed before sending any payment or personal information
- Be skeptical of any 'processing fee,' 'starter kit,' or shipping cost required to be considered for a deal
- Research the specific offer and company name alongside 'scam' before proceeding
- Report and block accounts making these unsolicited fee-based offers
How to report it
- Report the account directly through Instagram's scam or fraud reporting tool
- Report the scam to the FTC or the FBI's IC3 (ic3.gov) if payment was made
- Report to the Better Business Bureau if a business name was used in the scam
- Warn other creators in relevant community groups about the specific account or offer
Frequently asked questions
Is it normal to pay a fee to be considered for a modeling or brand deal?
No. Legitimate agencies and brands pay the model or creator, not the other way around. Any upfront fee required just to be considered for a deal is a strong sign of a scam.
How can I verify a modeling scout who contacted me on Instagram is real?
Check for an independent, verifiable business presence outside the DM conversation, ask for a written contract, and be wary of any request for payment before a genuine agreement is in place.
