Fake Paid Verification Badge Scam on Instagram
Scammers impersonate Instagram's Meta Verified program through DMs and ads, tricking users into paying fake fees or handing over login credentials for a badge that never arrives.

Instagram's real Meta Verified subscription gives fake verification scammers a genuine program to mimic, so a message claiming to offer 'verification' doesn't sound implausible to users who've heard the feature exists.
How this scam works on Instagram
A message or comment claims the recipient's account qualifies for a free or discounted blue checkmark, directing them to a phishing page that mimics Instagram's login and payment flow instead of the real Meta Verified subscription page inside the app. Victims who enter their Instagram username and password on the fake page hand their account directly to the scammer, who then locks them out and often uses the stolen account to run further scams against the victim's own followers.
A second version targets accounts with visible follower counts by impersonating an 'Instagram partnerships' or 'verification team' account, requesting a payment card or fee to 'process' verification faster than the standard in-app request — something the real Meta Verified process never requires since payment is only ever taken through Instagram's own subscription billing inside the app or its official website.
Common red flags
- A DM or comment claims you've been selected for free or discounted verification
- You're directed to a login page outside the Instagram app or meta.com to 'verify' your account
- Payment is requested via a link, gift card, or a third party rather than Instagram's in-app subscription billing
- The message creates urgency, claiming the offer expires within hours
- The sending account is newly created or impersonates 'Instagram Support' without an official badge itself
- You're asked for your password directly rather than being sent to Instagram's own verification flow
How to protect yourself
- Only apply for Meta Verified through Instagram's official in-app subscription settings
- Never enter your Instagram password on any page reached via a DM or comment link
- Enable two-factor authentication on your Instagram account to limit damage from credential theft
- Verify any 'Instagram Support' account by checking if it has Instagram's own official verification badge
- Do not pay any third party or unofficial channel claiming to expedite verification
- If you suspect your account is compromised, use Instagram's official account recovery form immediately
How to report it
- Use Instagram's in-app 'Report' function on the message, comment, or profile
- Report compromised accounts through Instagram's Help Center hacked-account recovery flow
- Report to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov if payment was made
- File a complaint with the FBI's IC3 at ic3.gov for financial losses
Frequently asked questions
Does Instagram ever DM users offering free verification?
No. Meta Verified is an opt-in paid subscription applied for and paid through Instagram's own app settings — Instagram does not proactively DM users offering free or discounted badges.
What should I do if I already entered my password on a fake verification page?
Change your Instagram password immediately from a trusted device, enable two-factor authentication, and use Instagram's hacked-account recovery form if you've been locked out.
