Fake Pet Breeder Scams via Zelle
How fake breeders push instant Zelle payments to take money for pets that will never be delivered.

Fake pet breeders often request payment through Zelle because it moves money instantly between bank accounts and offers no buyer protection. The victim is told to send a deposit or full price via Zelle to secure the animal quickly.
Zelle transfers to the wrong person are generally not reversible, which is why scammers prefer them for pet sales. A breeder insisting on Zelle for a pet you have not verified in person is a major warning sign.
How this scam works on Zelle
After sharing photos and a compelling backstory, the 'breeder' asks the buyer to send a Zelle deposit to reserve the pet, then the balance for shipping. The recipient is a personal phone number or email.
The payment lands instantly and is moved on. New shipping-related fees — climate-controlled crate, insurance, customs — are demanded by further Zelle transfers, with emotional appeals about the animal being stranded.
The pet never arrives. Because Zelle payments to personal accounts are usually irreversible, the victim has little recourse once the transfers clear.

Frequently asked questions
Can my bank reverse a Zelle pet payment?
Zelle payments to personal accounts are generally not reversible once sent, so recovery is difficult. Report the fraud to your bank promptly, but the strongest protection is verifying the animal in person or by live video and avoiding Zelle for unverified sellers.
