Telegram lets a fake police operation present itself as an official unit, complete with a channel name like 'Cyber Crime Division' and an avatar bearing a crest. Combined with the app's bots and the ability to add 'supervising officers' to a chat, the scheme can feel like a coordinated investigation rather than a single fraudster.
Real police do not run investigations or collect fines through Telegram. The platform's anonymity and automation are precisely the tools scammers use to manufacture authority and to disappear once a victim or reporter catches on.
How this scam works on Telegram
Contact may begin with a direct message accusing you of an offence, or with an invitation into a 'case' channel where multiple 'officers' appear to be handling your file. A bot might issue a 'case number' and instructions automatically.
The scammers claim your accounts are compromised or implicated in crime and insist you verify funds, pay a fine, or transfer money to a 'protected' account under their watch. Forged documents and badge images are sent to reinforce the act.
The staged presence of several 'officials' increases pressure and the sense that the matter is real and urgent, discouraging you from pausing to verify.
Common red flags
- A Telegram account or channel claims to be a police or cybercrime unit
- Multiple 'officers' or bots appear to be handling your supposed case
- You are accused of a crime and told your accounts are compromised
- You are pressured to transfer funds to a 'protected' or 'safe' account
- Forged warrants, badges, or case numbers are sent as proof
- Secrecy is demanded to stop you from verifying the claim
How to protect yourself
- Recognise that police forces do not operate case channels or bots on Telegram
- Never transfer money to 'secure' your funds — this is always a scam
- Leave the chat and contact your local police on an official number
- Do not share identity or banking details with any Telegram 'officer'
- Report and block the account or channel within Telegram
- Talk to someone you trust before taking any action under pressure
How to report it
- Use Telegram's 'Report' option on the user, bot, or channel
- Report the impersonation to your local police non-emergency line
- Lodge a report with your national cybercrime or fraud agency
Frequently asked questions
Why do these Telegram police scams use several 'officers'?
Staging multiple officials makes the operation look like a genuine investigation and increases pressure to comply. It is a manipulation tactic — real investigations are never conducted through a Telegram channel.
