Apple Pay person-to-person payments — sent via iMessage using Apple Cash — transfer instantly with no buyer protection, making them attractive to pet scammers who want fast settlement and want to avoid the chargeback rights that come with card purchases.
Fake pet sellers targeting Apple device users present an Apple Pay request as convenient and modern. Buyers assume Apple's brand reputation implies protection, which it does not when paying an individual rather than a merchant.
How this scam works on Apple Pay
A listing on Facebook Marketplace or a pet classified site shows professional photos of puppies at below-market prices. When the buyer agrees to purchase, the seller shares their Apple Cash phone number or link and asks for immediate payment 'to secure the puppy before another buyer takes it.'
Once Apple Cash payment is sent, the seller stalls delivery with excuses, then requests additional payments for transport crates, vaccination documentation, or delivery insurance before disappearing entirely.
Some scammers specifically target iPhone users by building rapport over iMessage, then routing the payment request through Apple Cash without explicitly mentioning the lack of buyer protection.
Common red flags
- Seller requests Apple Pay or Apple Cash rather than a protected payment method
- Post-payment demands for transport or vet fees emerge after the initial payment
- Seller cannot demonstrate the specific animal on a live video call with today's date visible
- Profile or listing history is very new
- Price is significantly lower than market rates for the breed
- Seller's stated location differs across different messages
How to protect yourself
- Treat Apple Cash payments to strangers as equivalent to cash — no buyer protection applies
- Insist on a live video call showing the specific animal and its current location before any payment
- Visit the seller in person and inspect the animal before transferring any funds
- Use a payment method that carries buyer protection for purchases — a credit card or PayPal Goods and Services
- Refuse all follow-up fee demands after the agreed purchase price
- Report suspicious listings to the platform and the app store if a fraudulent app is involved
How to report it
- Report the fraudulent listing to the platform where it appeared
- Contact Apple Support to report the Apple Cash transaction as fraud
- File a report with your national consumer protection authority
Frequently asked questions
Does Apple protect me if I send an Apple Cash payment to a scammer?
Apple Cash person-to-person payments are similar to cash — they are not covered by purchase protection. Apple may investigate and flag fraudulent Apple Cash accounts, but reversing individual transfers is not guaranteed. Always use buyer-protected payment methods for purchases from strangers.
