Fake Purebred Registration Papers Scam on Facebook Marketplace
Sellers on Facebook Marketplace advertise 'papered' purebred puppies with registration documents that are forged, recycled from a different litter, or simply invented.

Facebook Marketplace's local-pickup listings and photo-heavy format make it a common storefront for puppy sellers, and that same informality lets fake registration paperwork slide past buyers who never see the dog's actual breeder records before paying.
How this scam works on Facebook Marketplace
A Marketplace listing shows a litter of 'AKC registered' or 'purebred with papers' puppies at a price well below what a reputable breeder charges. The seller sends a photo of a registration certificate or pedigree chart by Messenger rather than handing over the physical document, and the certificate's registration number either doesn't match the puppy's microchip or breed club records, or belongs to a completely different dog. Buyers are told the 'real papers' will be mailed after pickup or after a deposit clears, and once the dog changes hands the promised documents never arrive or turn out to be photocopies with the breeder's name and litter number altered in image-editing software.
Because Marketplace listings can be posted and deleted within hours, the same seller account often relists the identical photos under a new litter description after a buyer starts asking questions, making it hard to trace a pattern until several buyers compare notes in local pet-buying groups.
Common red flags
- Registration certificate is only ever shown as a photo or screenshot, never the original document
- Price is significantly below the typical cost of a registered purebred of that breed
- Seller cannot produce the dog's parents, breeder name, or litter registration number on request
- Pressure to send a deposit via Zelle or Cash App before meeting the puppy in person
- Seller has no verifiable breeding history, kennel name, or prior litters on the page
- Story changes about when the 'real papers' will be delivered
How to protect yourself
- Verify the registration number directly with the breed registry's website before paying anything
- Insist on meeting the puppy and seeing the physical, original paperwork before any money changes hands
- Ask for the breeder's kennel name and cross-check it against the registry's breeder database
- Request veterinary records and a microchip number and confirm they match the registry listing
- Avoid sellers who only communicate through Messenger and refuse a phone call or video call
- Report suspicious listings to Facebook Marketplace and to local pet buyer protection groups
How to report it
- Report the listing and seller profile directly through Facebook Marketplace's 'Report' function
- File a complaint with the breed registry if a real registration number was misused
- Report the transaction to your state consumer protection office if a purchase was completed
- Warn local buy/sell groups with screenshots so other buyers can avoid the same seller
Frequently asked questions
Can I verify AKC or other registration papers before buying a Marketplace puppy?
Yes. Most breed registries let you search a registration or litter number on their official website, and a legitimate breeder will not object to you confirming it before you pay.
What if the seller says the papers are 'still being processed'?
Treat this as a red flag rather than a normal delay. Reputable breeders typically have registration documentation ready at or before the time puppies go to new homes.
