Bahrain attracts large numbers of migrant workers from South and Southeast Asia, East Africa, and the Arab world. Fraudulent recruitment agencies and online job posters exploit this demand, advertising positions in construction, hospitality, domestic work, and healthcare in Bahrain while collecting fees from applicants who may be based in their home countries or already in the Gulf.
The Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) in Bahrain licenses legitimate recruitment intermediaries, but fraudulent operators either work outside this system or exploit the complexity of cross-border hiring.
How this scam works on Bahrain
Job advertisements on Facebook, LinkedIn, and job board sites in South Asian and African languages promise positions in Bahrain with salaries stated in Bahraini dinars. Applicants go through a brief phone or WhatsApp interview and are quickly selected. They are then asked to pay for a visa letter, medical clearance, or airfare loan — sometimes in their home country through a local 'agent'.
Once fees are paid, the departure date is postponed repeatedly. After full payment, the recruiter disappears. Some victims who do travel on fraudulently arranged documents arrive in Bahrain to find the employer does not exist, leaving them without income and documents.
Domestic workers are particularly vulnerable because the kafala sponsorship system historically tied their legal status to their employer, creating additional power imbalances.
