Fake Recruiter Scams in El Salvador
How fraudulent job offers targeting Salvadorans exploit emigration pressures and high unemployment with promises of overseas work.

Last reviewed: 1 June 2026
Fake recruiter scams in El Salvador target a population with significant unemployment and a history of seeking better opportunities in the United States or other countries. Fraudulent job offers — particularly for US construction, domestic service, or seasonal work — promise legal pathways that require upfront fees, and either vanish after payment or deliver dangerous trafficking situations.
Fake recruiters also operate domestically, targeting urban jobseekers with offers of well-paying local positions that require deposits for uniforms, equipment, or background checks.
How this scam works on El Salvador
Recruitment offers circulate on Facebook and WhatsApp with professional-looking posts advertising positions with attractive wages. Interested applicants are contacted by a recruiter who requests fees for visa processing, English-language tests, medical examinations, or placement bonds.
After payment, the recruiter provides excuses for delays before eventually becoming unreachable. In more serious cross-border cases, victims who travel find conditions very different from what was promised or — in the most dangerous cases — discover their documents have been confiscated.
Common red flags
- Job offer requires any upfront payment before employment begins
- Salary advertised is significantly above typical market rates for the role
- Recruiter communicates only via social media or messaging apps
- Company not verifiable through El Salvador's official business register or the destination country's official employer register
- Urgency to accept and pay immediately to secure the position
How to protect yourself
- Use only recruitment agencies registered with El Salvador's Ministry of Labour
- Verify overseas work offers with the relevant embassy before travelling
- Never pay any upfront fee to secure a job — legitimate employers absorb recruitment costs
- Tell family your exact destination and the recruiter's full details before any travel
How to report it
- Report to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security of El Salvador
- File a report with the PNC (Policia Nacional Civil) with all evidence
- If trafficking is suspected, contact the Salvadoran anti-trafficking unit (CISNA)
Frequently asked questions
How can Salvadorans verify a US work opportunity from a local recruiter is genuine?
Contact the US Embassy in San Salvador to ask whether the employer is registered for the specific visa programme. The embassy can confirm whether a sponsoring employer is genuine. No legitimate US work visa can be processed without a named employer sponsor — if the recruiter cannot provide verified sponsor details, the offer is fraudulent.
