Fake Recruiter Scams in Maldives
Fraudulent recruitment agencies target Maldivian workers and incoming expatriates with fake hospitality and construction jobs requiring upfront placement fees.

The Maldives hospitality industry employs both local workers and a significant expatriate workforce, primarily from South Asia. Fake recruitment agencies targeting both groups charge upfront placement fees for positions that either do not exist or are drastically misrepresented in terms of salary, conditions, or employer.
Expatriate workers from Bangladesh, India, and Sri Lanka are particularly vulnerable, sometimes paying fees equivalent to many months' wages before discovering the deception — often upon arrival in the Maldives.
How this scam works on Maldives
Fake Maldivian recruitment agencies operate in both Malé and in origin countries, advertising positions in resort housekeeping, food and beverage, and construction. Applicants are charged registration, medical, and visa fees in stages, with each payment accompanied by reassurances that the job is secure.
Resort impersonation is a key tactic: fraudsters use the names and logos of genuine Five-Star Maldivian properties to make postings appear legitimate. Applicants who make direct contact with the real resort discover no such vacancy exists.
Local Maldivians seeking positions at overseas companies — particularly in hospitality management roles in the Middle East — also encounter fake recruiters operating on Facebook and LinkedIn.
