In the Cash App version of the fake Social Security scam, a caller posing as an SSA official says the victim's number was flagged for fraud and that a fee must be sent via Cash App to a 'case officer' to protect it. The instant peer-to-peer payment is framed as the only quick fix.
Cash App payments to individuals are treated like cash and are generally not reversible, which is why scammers use them. The SSA never requests Cash App payments, and any such demand is fraudulent.
How this scam works on Cash App
The caller claims the victim's Social Security number is tied to suspicious activity and that their benefits or identity are at risk. To 'secure' the number, the victim is told to send a Cash App payment to a personal $Cashtag.
The payment lands instantly and is moved on. The caller then invents additional 'verification' fees requested in more Cash App transfers.
The supposed case never existed, and the funds are gone. Because the payment went to a personal handle, recovery is very difficult.

Frequently asked questions
Can paying a Cash App fee really protect my SSN?
No. The SSA does not flag numbers and demand Cash App fees, and your number cannot be 'protected' by paying a stranger. Any such call is a scam. Hang up and verify your account status only through ssa.gov.
