Fake Stores and Scams on Etsy
How fraudulent sellers abuse Etsy's handmade marketplace trust to collect payment for items that do not arrive or are misrepresented.

Etsy's identity as a handmade and artisan marketplace creates a higher baseline trust than generic online retail. Buyers assume products are genuinely handcrafted and sellers are accountable small creators. Scammers exploit this trust by creating shops with generic product images, collecting orders and payment, and never shipping goods — or shipping cheap mass-produced items in place of described handmade products.
Etsy's purchase protection policy covers eligible purchases, but navigating the dispute process can be complex, and some fraud methods are designed specifically to circumvent it.
How this scam works on Etsy
A fraudulent Etsy seller typically creates a new shop, populates it with attractive product images taken without permission from legitimate sellers, and sets prices slightly below market. After orders and payment are collected, items either do not arrive or arrive as cheap counterfeits. The seller may initially respond to messages to delay a dispute being opened, then stop communicating.
Another variant involves 'digital download' scams: a listing promises a useful digital product (pattern, template, software key), collects payment, and delivers a worthless file or nothing at all. Buyers of digital products may find Etsy's protection harder to invoke because delivery of some digital file can be claimed.
Common red flags
- Etsy shop with very recent creation date but many listings of professional-quality products at low prices
- Product photos that appear on multiple platforms under different brand names (reverse-image-search the photos)
- Seller who is slow to respond to messages or provides vague shipping timelines
- Digital download listing with overly vague product description
- Few or no verified reviews for a shop selling popular items
How to protect yourself
- Check an Etsy shop's star seller status and verified review count before purchasing
- Reverse-image-search product photos to verify they have not been lifted from another source
- Prefer shops with many detailed reviews that mention specific product qualities
- Use Etsy's payment system only — never pay via direct bank transfer or PayPal to an Etsy seller outside the platform
- Open an Etsy case promptly if items do not arrive within the stated window
How to report it
- Open a Help request and then a case through Etsy's Resolution Centre for non-delivery or not-as-described items
- Report the shop to Etsy using the 'Report this shop' link on the seller page
- Contact your card issuer for a chargeback if Etsy does not resolve the case in your favour
