Authorised push payment (APP) fraud through Revolut has grown significantly in the UK and Europe as Revolut's user base has expanded. Fraudsters call victims claiming to be Revolut fraud-prevention specialists, warn them of suspicious activity on their account, and then guide them step-by-step into transferring their own balance to a 'safe account' — which is controlled by the scammer.
Because the victim authorises the transfer themselves, it passes Revolut's automated checks. These 'safe account' scams are among the highest-value fraud types by average victim loss.
How this scam works on Revolut
A caller presents themselves as a member of the Revolut security team, often spoofing the Revolut customer support number. They describe an in-progress fraudulent transaction on the victim's account — often an accurate-sounding amount or merchant — and say that to protect the funds, the victim must immediately move their balance to a new 'temporary holding account' controlled by Revolut.
The caller provides a Revolut account name or @username to receive the transfer. Some variants request the victim share their screen or install a 'verification' app, giving the caller direct device access. The victim believes they are being protected while they are in fact authorising fraud.
Common red flags
- Unsolicited call from someone claiming to be a Revolut fraud specialist or security agent
- Caller describes a suspicious transaction on your account and urges immediate action
- Instruction to move your balance to a 'safe' or 'holding' account — Revolut never requests this
- Caller asks for your PIN, one-time passcode, or to share your phone screen
- Revolut caller ID matches support numbers but the number can easily be spoofed
- Pressure to act immediately with threats that your funds will be seized if you do not comply
How to protect yourself
- Revolut will never call you and ask you to move funds to a holding account
- Hang up and contact Revolut directly through the in-app chat — do not call back any number the caller gives you
- Never share a one-time passcode, PIN, or screen with an inbound caller regardless of who they claim to be
- Enable Revolut's device security features and review your activity log yourself if you suspect a problem
- If you have already transferred funds, use the in-app report function immediately and mark it as a scam
How to report it
- Use Revolut's in-app 'Report a payment' feature immediately and contact support through the in-app chat
- Report to Action Fraud (UK) at actionfraud.police.uk with call records and transaction details
- Register the spoofed phone number with Ofcom's 7726 SMS scam reporting service
Frequently asked questions
Can Revolut reverse an APP scam transfer I authorised?
Revolut is a signatory to the UK's Authorised Push Payment reimbursement code, which means victims of APP fraud may be eligible for reimbursement under the PSR's mandatory scheme introduced in 2024. Report immediately through the app and to Action Fraud. Revolut will investigate and assess reimbursement eligibility, but cases are assessed individually.
