Fake Customer Support Scams Operating Through Telegram
Scammers impersonate the official support channels of crypto exchanges, software platforms, and financial services on Telegram, harvesting login credentials, seed phrases, and personal data from users seeking genuine help.

Telegram's channel and group structure allows scammers to create channels with names nearly identical to official support accounts, complete with matching logos and pinned messages that mimic genuine help content. Users who search for support on Telegram frequently encounter these imposters before finding the official channel.
The crypto sector is particularly affected: fake Binance, Coinbase, MetaMask, and Ledger support channels on Telegram are numerous, and the consequences of compliance — sharing a seed phrase or signing a malicious transaction — can result in total, irreversible wallet drain.
How this scam works on Telegram
A user experiencing a problem with a crypto wallet, exchange account, or software service searches Telegram for the company's support channel. A fake channel appears in search results with a near-identical name and professional appearance. The user posts their problem and a 'support agent' responds quickly.
The agent asks for the user's email, account details, or — in wallet cases — their seed phrase to 'verify the account'. Providing a seed phrase gives the scammer full control of the wallet immediately. For exchange accounts, the scammer requests a verification code that is actually an OTP sent to the user's email.
Some fake support channels operate alongside the real one, monitoring the official channel for users who post problems and immediately reaching out via private message claiming to be support staff assigned to their case.
Common red flags
- Telegram support channel found through search that is not listed on the company's official website
- Support agent who contacts you via private message after you post a problem in a public group
- Request for your seed phrase, recovery phrase, or private key as part of any support process
- Support agent asking you to read out a verification code sent to your email or phone
- Support interaction that moves quickly to requesting personal credentials rather than troubleshooting steps
How to protect yourself
- Find official Telegram support channels only through the company's verified website — never through Telegram search
- Understand that no legitimate support agent will ever ask for your seed phrase
- Never share OTPs or verification codes with anyone, including people claiming to be technical support
- Report fake support channels to Telegram using the report channel function
- Verify any support interaction by cross-checking with the official company website or help centre
How to report it
- Report the fake Telegram channel using Telegram's report function
- Notify the legitimate company whose brand is being impersonated
- Report to your national cybercrime authority if funds or credentials were compromised
Frequently asked questions
Why do crypto companies not shut down fake Telegram support channels faster?
Telegram has no equivalent of domain name enforcement — anyone can create a channel with any name. Crypto companies actively request Telegram to remove fake channels but the process is manual and new ones appear constantly. Always verify support channels through the official website, not Telegram search.
