Fake OpenSea Account Suspension Appeal Scams
Phishing emails impersonating OpenSea warn collectors that their accounts have been suspended for policy violations and direct them to fake appeal pages that harvest credentials and wallet approvals.

OpenSea enforces content and conduct policies that can result in account restrictions for genuine violations. Scammers exploit awareness of this process by sending fake suspension notices to active NFT users, claiming their account has been flagged for 'suspicious trading activity,' 'copyright infringement,' or 'unverified identity' and is subject to immediate suspension unless an appeal is filed.
The notice creates urgency, particularly for sellers with live listings who fear losing sales. The appeal form linked in the email is hosted on a convincing clone of OpenSea's interface. After entering their email and password, users are presented with a 'wallet re-verification' step that requests a signing approval — harvesting both credentials and wallet permissions in a single flow.
OpenSea communicates genuine account actions through in-platform notifications and from verified @opensea.io email addresses. Users can always check their account status by logging directly into opensea.io without clicking any email link.
How this scam works on the OpenSea brand
The phishing email references a fabricated violation category — 'DMCA takedown notice received' or 'unusual bidding pattern detected' — and attaches a fake 'OpenSea Trust and Safety Notice' PDF. A button labeled 'Submit Appeal' links to a cloned OpenSea login page where credentials are harvested.
After the login step, the victim is told their identity must be confirmed to complete the appeal. The 'identity verification' step prompts a MetaMask or WalletConnect signing request, which contains an EIP-712 message or an NFT setApprovalForAll approval. With both credentials and wallet approval, the attacker can delist the victim's NFTs, purchase them at artificially low prices, and transfer them out.
OpenSea's genuine suspension appeals are handled through the in-platform Help Center at support.opensea.io. No appeal process requires signing a new wallet message or re-entering credentials from a link in an email.
Common red flags
- Email sender is not exactly @opensea.io — check for opensea-trust.com, opensea-appeals.net, and similar
- Urgency: 'appeal within 48 hours or your account will be permanently disabled'
- Appeal process requires entering login credentials on an external page rather than at opensea.io
- Wallet re-verification step requests an EIP-712 signature or setApprovalForAll as part of an account appeal
- Email references a specific violation but the violation cannot be found in your opensea.io account notifications
- PDF attachment claiming to be an 'OpenSea Trust and Safety Notice' — this document format is not used by OpenSea
How to protect yourself
- Never click appeal links in emails — log directly into opensea.io to check your account status
- Enable two-factor authentication on your OpenSea account and on the associated email address
- Treat any appeal process that includes a wallet signing step with extreme suspicion — account appeals do not require wallet re-verification
- Verify the sender email domain carefully; 'opensea' appearing anywhere in the domain is insufficient — it must be exactly @opensea.io
- Contact OpenSea support through the official Help Center at support.opensea.io if you believe there is a genuine account issue
How to report it
- Report the phishing email and fake domain to OpenSea at [email protected]
- Forward phishing emails to your email provider's abuse reporting mechanism
- Submit the phishing URL to Google Safe Browsing
- File a report with IC3.gov (US) or Action Fraud (UK) if credentials or assets were compromised
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my OpenSea account has a genuine restriction?
Log directly into opensea.io in a new browser tab — not via any link from an email. Genuine account restrictions appear as in-platform notifications within your OpenSea account dashboard.
Does OpenSea's appeal process require wallet signing?
No. Legitimate OpenSea account appeals are handled through the Help Center at support.opensea.io and involve describing the issue in a support ticket. No wallet signature is required for an account appeal.
