Finanční správa impersonation campaigns target Czech residents with phishing SMS and email claiming tax refunds or debts. Victims are directed to convincing fake portals that harvest Czech online banking credentials or payment card details.
Czech online banking relies heavily on SMS OTP and mobile banking apps. Compromising banking credentials through a Finanční správa lookalike portal allows attackers to initiate transfers before victims detect the fraud. NÚKIB (National Cyber and Information Security Agency) has tracked multiple such campaigns.
How this scam works on Czechia
A phishing SMS or email arrives claiming a CZK tax refund is available, with a link to a fake moje.dane.cz or dp.mfcr.cz lookalike. The page requests bank credentials or prompts card entry for a nominal CZK processing fee.
Telephone variants feature callers identifying as Finanční správa inspectors, citing a specific CZK shortfall and threatening immediate asset seizure. Payment via online banking transfer to a 'Finanční správa reference account' is demanded.
Some campaigns time with the Czech tax-return season (typically March–April) when recipients are expecting refunds and more likely to respond.
