Corporate income tax was introduced in Oman in 2017 and expanded in recent years, making a significant number of residents and businesses newly aware of tax obligations but potentially uncertain of the precise details. Fraudsters exploit this uncertainty by impersonating the Oman Tax Authority (OTA) and threatening immediate penalties for alleged unpaid taxes.
Self-employed expats and small business owners who are navigating Oman's tax system for the first time are particularly vulnerable to these calls.
How this scam works on Oman
Victims receive a call or SMS from someone claiming to be an OTA compliance officer. The caller references the victim's business name or Tax Identification Number — sometimes genuine data from public records — and claims that unpaid tax liabilities have been identified. Immediate payment is demanded to avoid asset freezing or criminal referral.
Payments are directed to personal bank accounts or via money transfer services rather than through the OTA's official payment channels. Fake OTA letters with forged letterheads are sometimes emailed or WhatsApp-messaged to increase credibility.
Victims who have recently filed or registered with the OTA may be specifically targeted because their contact information is available and their status is fresh.
Common red flags
- Unexpected demand for tax payment via bank transfer to a personal account
- Threats of immediate arrest or business closure unless payment is made within hours
- Payment instructions do not reference the OTA's official portal or payment system
- Official-looking letter arrives via WhatsApp rather than registered mail
- Caller becomes aggressive when asked to provide a verifiable case reference
How to protect yourself
- All legitimate OTA payments are made through the official OTA portal — never to a personal account
- Call the OTA directly on the number at taxoman.gov.om to verify any claimed liability
- Request a written formal notice before taking any action on an alleged tax debt
- Consult a registered tax adviser before paying any unexpected tax demand
- Do not allow urgency to prevent you from verifying independently
How to report it
- Report to the Oman Tax Authority via its official contact channels at taxoman.gov.om
- File a complaint with the Royal Oman Police Cybercrime Unit
- Alert your bank if a suspicious transfer has already been initiated
Frequently asked questions
The OTA has my tax ID number — does that prove the caller is genuine?
No. Tax ID numbers can be obtained from business registration records. Always verify by calling the OTA directly through the number on their official website.
