Telegram's mix of public channels, bots, and private chats gives fake tax schemes several entry points. A victim might join a channel promising 'tax rebate help' or receive a direct message from an account using an official-sounding username and a government emblem as its avatar.
Real tax authorities do not run refund desks or debt-collection through Telegram. The app's automation features let scammers deploy bots that reply instantly and even mimic a queued 'case officer', lending a thin coat of bureaucratic credibility to a process that exists only to take your money.
How this scam works on Telegram
Contact often begins inside a channel advertising fast tax refunds or amnesty on overdue balances. A bot or 'agent' then moves you into a private chat to 'process your case', requesting your tax number and bank details up front.
The script alternates between reward and threat: a refund is supposedly ready, but a small 'release fee' or 'clearance charge' must be paid first; or a debt exists and immediate payment avoids escalation. Telegram bots can fire these prompts automatically, making the operation feel staffed and official.
When you ask for proof, the scammer sends a forged assessment file or a link to a cloned portal, then presses for payment by transfer, voucher, or crypto before any 'deadline' lapses.

- Withhold your tax reference, identity documents, and bank details from the chat
- Report and block the account or channel within Telegram
- Confirm any genuine-seeming concern by calling the tax office directly
How to report it
- Use Telegram's 'Report' function on the channel, bot, or user
- Send the details to your national tax authority's official fraud reporting address
- Lodge a report with your local cybercrime or consumer protection agency
