Instagram is an unconventional but growing channel for fake vehicle sales, particularly for desirable or luxury cars. High-quality car photography performs extremely well on the platform, making it easy for a fraudulent account to attract genuine inquiries from users who would typically buy through conventional channels.
These operations often target younger buyers who are comfortable transacting on social platforms and may not apply the same level of scrutiny they would give a traditional car dealership or formal listing site.
How this scam works on Instagram
An Instagram account posts high-quality photographs of a desirable vehicle — often a prestige brand — with a price in the caption and an invitation to DM for details. When a buyer messages, the seller responds with enthusiasm and shares additional photos, a description of the car's history, and a compelling reason for the attractive price.
The seller then requests a holding deposit by bank transfer or cryptocurrency before arranging a viewing, citing other interested parties as urgency. After payment, the seller either disappears or invents further delays and costs to extract additional money before eventually becoming unresponsive.
Common red flags
- Account has no consistent post history beyond vehicle photos and has few followers or follower interactions
- Vehicle is listed at a price significantly below dealer trade-in value
- Seller requests a deposit before any in-person viewing can be arranged
- Seller cannot provide a vehicle history report reference or verify ownership documents in advance
- Communication moves quickly from Instagram DM to WhatsApp or an external messaging app
- Photographs are taken in a way that obscures the registration plate or location
How to protect yourself
- Only pay for a vehicle after a physical in-person inspection and identity verification of the seller
- Request the vehicle registration number before any meeting and run a title and history check independently
- Reverse-image search listing photos to check whether they appear on legitimate dealer or auction sites
- Avoid making any payment based solely on Instagram communication — use licensed channels for the actual transaction
- Meet in a public, well-lit location and bring a companion if agreeing to an in-person viewing
How to report it
- Report the Instagram account using the 'Report' menu, selecting 'Sale of counterfeit goods or fraud'
- File a report with the FBI's IC3 or your equivalent national fraud authority
- Report to local police if you paid a deposit and the seller is no longer contactable
Frequently asked questions
Is it ever safe to buy a car through Instagram?
Instagram provides no buyer protection for vehicle transactions. If a car you found on Instagram interests you, insist on verifying ownership documents, inspecting the vehicle in person, and completing the financial transaction through a traceable, reversible payment method — just as you would for any private sale.
