Telegram's bot ecosystem allows foreign lottery scam operators to contact hundreds of thousands of users simultaneously with personalised-looking lottery win notifications. The bot can respond to initial queries with convincing automated scripts, reducing the need for human operators in the early stages of the fraud.
The platform's file-sharing capabilities are also exploited: convincing PDF 'prize certificates', official-looking letter templates, and fake banking documents are sent via Telegram to maintain the illusion of a legitimate international prize process.
How this scam works on Telegram
A Telegram bot sends a notification congratulating the recipient on winning a specified amount in a named international lottery. A claims reference number and a human agent's Telegram handle are included. When the victim contacts the agent, they receive a PDF prize certificate and a timeline for payment, conditional on paying an initial processing fee.
Fee demands are presented with fabricated documentation — tax clearance certificates, insurance forms, and central bank approval letters. Each document is well-designed and includes logos borrowed from real institutions. The victim pays multiple fees over days or weeks before the agent stops responding.
Some Telegram lottery fraud channels operate openly, posting fake winner testimonials and prize announcements to build a subscriber base before initiating individual fee-collection conversations.

Frequently asked questions
Why do Telegram lottery scams send convincing PDF documents?
Professional-looking documents increase the perceived legitimacy of the scam and give victims confidence to make the first fee payment. The documents are entirely fabricated and their logos are stolen from real institutions. Possessing such a document does not mean a prize exists.
