Free in-game currency scams are a persistent threat in gaming Discords, particularly for popular titles with large communities. Scammers exploit younger audiences and players who want competitive advantages without spending real money.
These scams range from outright credential theft to subscription traps and survey farms, all using the social proof of a busy Discord community to appear legitimate.
How this scam works on Discord
A bot or user posts in a game's Discord server offering a generator tool or method for obtaining free premium currency or rare items. The victim is directed to an external site that asks for their game account username and password to 'transfer' the currency, or requires completing surveys that generate revenue for the scammer.
In credential theft variants, the login details are harvested immediately and the game account is taken over, stripped of valuable items, and sometimes sold. In survey variants, the victim completes offer after offer with the currency never arriving.
Some operations use Discord bots that DM all members of large game servers with personalised messages referencing the user's in-game name, obtained through data scraping, making the scam feel targeted and credible.
Common red flags
- Offer of free in-game currency requiring account login on a third-party site
- Survey completion required before currency is 'transferred'
- Bot DM mentioning your username and offering currency specific to your account level
- External site URL unrelated to the game publisher
- 'Human verification' steps that are actually subscription sign-ups
- Discord server or user with no verifiable connection to the game publisher
How to protect yourself
- Never enter game account credentials on any site other than the official game launcher or publisher site
- Recognise that no third-party tool can legitimately generate in-game currency — they require server-side access the publisher controls
- Enable two-factor authentication on your game account to limit damage if credentials are already compromised
- Treat all bot DMs promising free items as scams regardless of how personalised they appear
- Report currency-generator posts to the server moderators immediately
How to report it
- Report the bot or user account via Discord's Report feature
- Report to the game publisher's trust and safety team so they can monitor for account takeovers
- If you entered credentials on a third-party site, change your password and contact the game's support team immediately
Frequently asked questions
Can any third-party tool legitimately provide free in-game currency?
No. In-game currencies are controlled entirely by the game's servers. Any tool claiming to generate or transfer currency externally is fraudulent.
