TikTok's creator economy has grown rapidly, and with it the volume of fraudulent brand partnership offers circulating through the platform's DM system. The platform's predominantly younger audience includes many first-time creators who may not yet have the experience to recognise the hallmarks of a fake sponsorship approach versus a legitimate one.
Fraudsters tailor fake TikTok brand deals to trending niches — beauty, fitness, food, gaming — to appear contextually relevant to their targets, increasing the credibility of the approach.
How this scam works on TikTok
A TikTok DM from an account claiming to represent a consumer brand asks the creator if they would be interested in a paid campaign for a product relevant to their content. The conversation builds naturally until the creator is asked to click a link to submit their media kit or sign a contract via an external portal — a step that harvests their login credentials.
In an advance fee variant, the representative confirms the deal and asks the creator to purchase the product being promoted at a discounted rate for the campaign, with the cost deducted from their first payment. The product is never delivered and the payment never arrives.
Some scammers ask for a creator's contact email ostensibly to send an official brief, then pivot the conversation to email where they can deploy more convincing phishing documents and attachments.
Common red flags
- TikTok DM from an account claiming to be a brand with no verification badge and a recently created profile
- Offer requiring an advance purchase of the product before payment commences
- Link to a sign-up portal outside TikTok's native creator marketplace requesting login credentials
- Deal rates significantly above or below standard market rates for the creator's audience size
- Representative who deflects requests to speak by video call or provide verifiable contact details
- Escalating requests for personal information including address, banking details, or government ID early in the negotiation
How to protect yourself
- Use TikTok's official Creator Marketplace for brand partnerships — deals initiated there involve verified brand accounts
- Verify any brand DM by searching for the brand's official TikTok account and confirming the outreach independently
- Never pay in advance for any product associated with a brand deal before receiving confirmed payment
- Avoid clicking links in TikTok DMs claiming to be from brands — navigate directly to official brand websites or creator portals
- Establish a standard outreach protocol requiring brands to communicate through verified channels before sharing personal details
- Enable two-factor authentication on your TikTok account to protect it from credential-based compromise
How to report it
- Report the fraudulent account to TikTok using the in-app report function and select 'Impersonation'
- Alert the genuine brand via their official verified TikTok account or website so they can warn their audience
- File a complaint with your national consumer protection authority if advance payment was made
