East Africa's mobile lending ecosystem has produced genuine digital credit products used by millions, but it has also enabled a wave of loan scam operators who advertise instant loans and collect M-Pesa advance fees before disbursing any funds. The promise of fast credit with minimal documentation appeals to borrowers who have been refused by formal lenders.
Borrowers send an M-Pesa 'registration fee', 'insurance bond', or 'processing charge' and then wait for loan disbursement that never arrives. The operator may delay with a series of additional fee requests before disappearing.
How this scam works on M-Pesa
Advertisements for instant loans appear on Facebook, WhatsApp loan groups, and local classified sites. Contact is made via WhatsApp or phone. After a brief eligibility conversation, the applicant is approved — instantly — but told a small M-Pesa fee is required before the loan can be disbursed. The fee is framed as mandatory collateral, insurance, or regulatory compliance.
After payment, the 'lender' commits to disbursement within hours. A new delay then emerges — a system issue, a verification requirement — accompanied by another fee request. The cycle continues until the applicant stops paying.
Some operators also collect personal identification data during the application process, using it for subsequent identity fraud.

Frequently asked questions
Do legitimate mobile lenders in Kenya ever charge advance fees?
No. Regulated mobile lenders in Kenya disburse the net loan amount directly to your M-Pesa account — any processing or origination fees are deducted from the loan, not collected in advance. If a lender requires you to send M-Pesa money before receiving any loan funds, it is not a legitimate lender.
