Instagram's emphasis on attractive imagery makes it an ideal platform for long-distance romance scammers. A carefully curated feed of travel photos, professional-looking portraits, and aspirational lifestyle content can make a fabricated persona appear entirely credible without requiring any real interaction.
Scammers contact potential victims through story replies, comment sections, or direct messages, leveraging the platform's social conventions to establish initial contact in a way that feels natural.
How this scam works on Instagram
After making contact, the scammer builds a romantic connection over direct messages. Their claimed location — abroad, on assignment, or working in a remote region — explains why meetings are impossible. The relationship is sustained through affectionate messages and, occasionally, pre-recorded video content.
In time, a financial emergency is introduced: medical bills, a stranded shipment, visa fees, or a business crisis. The victim is asked to help someone they have grown to love. Payments are requested through bank transfer, gift cards, or cryptocurrency.
Once the victim sends money, further emergencies follow until the victim either runs out of funds or recognises the fraud.
