Mobile phone insurance fraud operates in two related ways: fraudsters impersonating insurance administrators to collect excess payments for claims they never process, and genuine policyholders deceived into providing account verification details that are then used to access their cover or identity. Both begin with a phone call.
The first variant targets people who have recently filed or are about to file an insurance claim. The caller claims a payment is needed to process or release the device replacement. The second variant targets anyone with phone insurance, probing for verification details under the cover of a routine account check.
How this scam works on phone calls
A caller claims to be from the policyholder's phone insurer or carrier, saying a device replacement or claim is being processed but a small excess or administration fee must be paid by card before it can proceed. Payment is taken, but no replacement arrives and the claim number provided is invalid when checked.
In the identity-harvest variant, a caller conducts what sounds like a routine security verification, gathering name, address, date of birth, and policy number. These details are then used to access the account, change delivery addresses for replacements, or submit fraudulent claims on behalf of the real policyholder.
Common red flags
- Caller requests excess or administration payment before a replacement can be dispatched
- You receive a call about a claim you did not file
- Caller collects detailed personal information under the guise of a security check
- Reference numbers provided cannot be verified on the insurer's official portal
- Payment is requested by an unusual method such as bank transfer or gift card rather than a standard card transaction
How to protect yourself
- File and manage insurance claims only through your insurer's official app, website, or verified phone number
- Never provide personal verification details to an incoming caller — call the insurer back on the number on your policy documents
- Request a claim reference number that you can verify online before making any payment
- Set a password or verbal security phrase on your insurance account if the option exists
- Review your insurance portal regularly for claims you did not submit
How to report it
- Report to your insurer's fraud team using the number on your policy documents
- Report to Action Fraud (UK) or the FTC (US) at reportfraud.ftc.gov
- If payment was made, contact your bank to dispute the transaction
Frequently asked questions
Should I pay a claimed insurance excess by phone?
Legitimate insurers collect excess payments through their official portal or by card via their verified phone number. If you receive an incoming call requesting excess payment, hang up and call your insurer back on the number printed on your policy.
