Off-Platform Payment Scams on eBay
eBay scammers contact potential buyers or sellers outside eBay's checkout system, claiming payment or shipping is easier through alternative channels. Buyers who comply lose eBay Money Back Guarantee protection.

eBay's Money Back Guarantee is one of the strongest buyer protections in e-commerce, covering most transactions paid through eBay's checkout. Scammers on both sides of a transaction know this and systematically attempt to move payments outside the platform to void this protection.
The tactics differ for buyers and sellers but share a common mechanism: get the financial exchange off eBay's system before the fraud is executed.
How this scam works on eBay
For buyers, a seller contacts them after listing a high-demand item at an attractive price but asks for payment via Zelle, bank transfer, or PayPal Friends and Family outside eBay's checkout, claiming a fee saving or faster shipping. Once paid, the item either never arrives or is a counterfeit.
For sellers, a buyer sends a fake PayPal payment confirmation and asks the seller to ship immediately. The 'payment' email looks legitimate but is fabricated — PayPal never received the payment. By the time the seller checks their actual PayPal balance, the item has been shipped and is unrecoverable.
A third variant uses fake eBay Motors escrow services for vehicle sales. A 'buyer' offers to use an eBay-affiliated escrow service that is actually a fraudulent site, collecting the seller's vehicle and the buyer's funds simultaneously.
