Negative-Option Billing Scams on TikTok
TikTok's short-video format and impulse-driven browsing make it fertile ground for subscription products that capture payment details on fast-loading landing pages where negative-option billing consent is easily missed.

TikTok users encounter subscription offers through native ads, creator partnerships, and viral product demonstrations. The platform's frictionless link-in-bio and TikTok Shop integration mean a viewer can go from watching a 15-second clip to entering their card details in under a minute — leaving little time to scrutinise billing terms.
Negative-option scammers exploit this speed deliberately. Landing pages are optimised for mobile checkout, and recurring billing disclosures are formatted to appear as standard legal boilerplate rather than important financial commitments.
How this scam works on TikTok
A TikTok creator or sponsored ad promotes a beauty product, app, or digital tool with a 'link in bio' or TikTok Shop listing offering a free first shipment or trial. The checkout page loads quickly on mobile and surfaces the price prominently, but the subscription auto-renewal terms are below the fold or in a separate tab.
After checkout, the user receives the trial item and is charged full price the following month. Cancellation requires logging into an account portal the user may not remember creating, or contacting a customer service email that responds with delay tactics. Some operators use confusing subscription tiers — pausing versus cancelling — to retain billing access.
Common red flags
- TikTok ad or creator video for a product with a 'free first box' offer
- Mobile checkout page that loads very fast with billing terms below the visible screen area
- Post-checkout email confirmation that mentions a recurring charge for the first time
- Cancellation process requires calling a phone number during limited business hours
- Product sold via TikTok Shop with reviews that appear bulk-generated
- No clear pricing for subsequent shipments shown before payment is finalised
How to protect yourself
- Scroll the full checkout page before submitting payment — look for subscription or auto-renewal text
- Search the brand name plus 'cancel' to assess how easy cancellation actually is before buying
- Use a virtual card with a monthly limit and monitor for recurring charges
- Screenshot the checkout page including any terms displayed at the time of purchase
- Prefer one-time purchase options over trial subscriptions from unfamiliar TikTok brands
How to report it
- Use TikTok's in-app 'Report' function on the ad or the creator's sponsored video
- File a complaint with the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov describing the billing and cancellation experience
- Dispute charges with your card issuer and ask them to block future charges from the merchant
Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel a TikTok Shop subscription if I did not realise I was signing up for one?
Yes — contact the seller directly first, then escalate to TikTok Shop's buyer protection if you receive no response. You can also dispute the charge with your card issuer if the recurring terms were not clearly disclosed.
