Pet DNA Health Test Kit Scam on TikTok
TikTok ads and sponsored videos push cheap 'pet DNA health test kits' that promise breed and disease-risk results but deliver inaccurate reports, spam subscriptions, or nothing at all.

TikTok's short-form video ads are a natural fit for pet DNA kit promotions, using cute-pet footage and dramatic 'you won't believe what we found' hooks to drive impulse purchases before viewers have a chance to research the company behind the kit.
How this scam works on TikTok
A sponsored TikTok video shows a pet owner swabbing their dog or cat's cheek and receiving a dramatic breed or health-risk reveal, with a discount code and link in the video description or bio. Buyers who order the kit either receive nothing after payment, receive a kit that produces a generic or clearly inaccurate result (unrelated breed combinations, implausible health warnings), or discover they were unknowingly enrolled in a recurring monthly subscription for 'ongoing health monitoring' that is difficult to cancel. Some ad accounts use manipulated or fabricated 'lab results' screenshots as social proof in the comments section, and the same ad creative reappears under multiple different TikTok Shop or website storefronts once one is reported and taken down.
Because TikTok Shop and affiliate links let sellers change storefront names quickly, dissatisfied buyers often find that the seller account from their original purchase no longer exists by the time they try to request a refund or dispute a subscription charge.
Common red flags
- Kit is advertised only through short viral video ads with dramatic 'reveal' reactions, not an established veterinary or genetics brand
- Checkout requires entering a card number for a 'small shipping fee' that later triggers recurring charges
- No clear information about the lab performing the DNA analysis or its accreditation
- Reviews and result screenshots appear only in the comments section, not on an independent review site
- Seller's TikTok Shop or storefront name changes between the ad and the actual checkout page
- Difficulty finding a cancellation process for an unwanted recurring subscription
How to protect yourself
- Research the company name independently outside TikTok before ordering, including checking for a real accredited lab
- Read checkout terms carefully for hidden subscription enrollment before entering card details
- Use a card or payment method that lets you easily monitor and dispute recurring charges
- Compare the kit against established, independently reviewed pet DNA testing companies before buying
- Set a calendar reminder to cancel any trial subscription before the free period ends
- Report the ad to TikTok if the checkout experience does not match what was advertised
How to report it
- Report the ad and seller account directly through TikTok's ad reporting or in-app report tool
- Dispute unauthorized recurring charges with your card issuer or bank
- File a complaint with the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov describing the subscription trap
- Report the storefront to TikTok Shop's trust and safety team if purchased through TikTok Shop
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if a pet DNA kit advertised on TikTok is legitimate?
Check whether the company discloses its lab accreditation, has an established presence and reviews outside of TikTok, and offers clear, non-recurring pricing before you provide payment details.
What if I was signed up for a subscription I didn't agree to?
Contact your card issuer to dispute the charges and request a block on future billing from that merchant, then report the seller to TikTok and the FTC.
