Reddit users who participate in genuine subreddit giveaways or brand contests are primed to expect potential winning notifications through the platform's DM system. Scammers monitor participation in these giveaways and time their fraudulent notifications to coincide plausibly with the draw's expected announcement timing, making the DM feel like a natural follow-up.
The Reddit DM format carries a degree of trust because it is associated with peer-to-peer communication rather than broadcast advertising, and a message from an account with a gaming, brand, or community name can appear to be official communication from a trusted source.
How this scam works on Reddit
After a large subreddit giveaway post accumulates many entries, scam accounts send DMs to a selection of participants claiming they were drawn as winners. The DM provides a claim code and a link to confirm shipping details. The link leads to a page that requests a small delivery fee or captures social media credentials under the guise of identity verification.
Some scammers directly monitor giveaway posts and DM entrants immediately after the draw closes — before the real winner announcement — creating a window where recipients believe the notification is genuine. The timing precision makes the fraud harder to identify.
Compromised Reddit accounts with established giveaway host history are also used: the account contacts previous entrants of earlier giveaways with notifications for prizes from draws the recipient genuinely entered but did not win.
Common red flags
- DM arrives from an account whose username resembles a brand or subreddit moderator but has minor differences
- Winning notification arrives in DM rather than through a public announcement post in the subreddit
- Claim process requires visiting an external site and entering any financial or login information
- Message creates urgency with a short claim window after which the prize is forfeited
- Account sending the DM has a recent creation date or limited history outside of giveaway-related posts
- You cannot locate any record of the giveaway in the subreddit's post history
How to protect yourself
- Verify any winning notification by checking the original giveaway post in the subreddit for a public winner announcement
- Never pay a fee or provide credentials to claim a Reddit prize regardless of how authentic the DM appears
- Contact the verified subreddit moderators through the modmail feature to confirm whether a winning DM is genuine
- Report suspicious DMs to Reddit admins using the DM's report function
- Be particularly cautious if the DM arrives from an account you cannot find by searching the subreddit's post history
How to report it
- Report the DM to Reddit admins using the report function within the DM
- Alert subreddit moderators through modmail so they can post a community warning
- File a report with your national consumer protection authority if money was sent
Frequently asked questions
How are genuine Reddit giveaway winners usually notified?
Legitimate giveaways typically announce winners publicly in the original post or a follow-up post in the same subreddit. A DM follow-up may occur, but it should reference the public announcement. Any DM that arrives without a corresponding public winner announcement should be treated with significant caution.
