Cash App prize scams circulate heavily on Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter, where influencer impersonators promote fake giveaways and then DM apparent winners requesting a small Cash App payment to 'unlock' their prize. The informal, social-native nature of Cash App fits the social media context and makes the request feel less alarming than a wire transfer.
Once the first Cash App payment is made, the victim is told additional fees are needed and the cycle repeats until they stop sending money.
How this scam works on Cash App
A social media post from a fake celebrity account announces a large giveaway. Apparent winners receive a DM with a congratulations message and a link to a 'prize portal' that requests a small Cash App fee to release the winnings.
Flipside scams involve the victim being sent a fake Cash App 'pending balance' screenshot showing a large amount ready to be deposited — all they need to do is send a small verification amount via Cash App first.
After each payment, a new excuse emerges: insurance, tax clearance, courier fee. The promised prize is never sent.
Common red flags
- Prize announcement came via DM from an account you do not normally interact with
- Cash App fee required to release or verify a prize
- Fake Cash App balance screenshot sent as proof of pending winnings
- Requests for multiple escalating fees after each payment
- Winner selected from a giveaway you did not knowingly enter
- Account announcing the prize is newly created or recently changed its display name
How to protect yourself
- Know that no real prize requires a Cash App fee to release
- Verify giveaway results through the genuine brand's official verified account
- Never send Cash App payments to receive money — money flows from the prize to you, not the reverse
- Report fake giveaway accounts to the social media platform immediately
- Warn friends who actively engage with social media giveaways about this pattern
- Block and report any DM that requests Cash App payment for a prize
How to report it
- Report the fake prize account to the social media platform's trust and safety team
- Report the Cash App handle to Cash App support as fraudulent
- File a consumer fraud report with your national protection authority
