Pinterest's audience browses for home, lifestyle, and business inspiration, making 'work from home' and 'side hustle' content naturally indexed on the platform. MLM operators create boards and pins presenting their scheme as a home business opportunity, reaching users who are actively searching for flexible income options.
Because Pinterest content persists and gets saved across boards, a single well-created pin about a home business opportunity can continue circulating for years, recruiting consistently without ongoing effort from the original pinner.
How this scam works on Pinterest
MLM participants create Pinterest boards titled 'Work From Home Ideas' or 'Side Hustle Income' and pin content showcasing their scheme's products alongside income and lifestyle imagery. The pin description includes a link to the participant's replicated website, where visitors can sign up as a distributor.
Newcomers who click through are taken to a landing page that emphasises the business opportunity rather than the product. A starter kit purchase is required to activate the 'business'. The participant earns a recruitment bonus when their referred person buys the kit.
Common red flags
- Pinterest pin combining 'work from home' messaging with a specific product range
- Pin description linking to a 'join my team' or 'start your business' landing page
- Landing page shows income testimonials but no income disclosure statement
- Starter kit purchase required to access the business opportunity
- Business described as 'residual' or 'passive' income from building a team
- Pin content focuses on the lifestyle outcome rather than the product itself
How to protect yourself
- Treat any Pinterest pin that combines products with income opportunity messaging as a potential MLM recruitment funnel
- Request an income disclosure statement before signing up as a distributor for any home business scheme
- Research the scheme name independently using search terms like 'income disclosure' and 'average earnings'
- Avoid starter kit purchases until you have reviewed all associated costs and realistic income expectations
- Report misleading Pinterest pins using the 'Report Pin' function
How to report it
- Use the three-dot menu on the Pinterest pin and select 'Report Pin' — choose the most appropriate reason
- File a complaint with the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov if income claims on linked sites are deceptive
- Contact the scheme's parent company to request an income disclosure statement if one is not provided voluntarily
Frequently asked questions
Can I really start a home business by following a Pinterest pin about a product opportunity?
Legitimate home businesses do exist, but many 'opportunity' pins on Pinterest lead to MLM schemes where the business model depends more on recruiting other distributors than on selling to external customers. Always request the income disclosure statement before investing any money.
