X's public-facing discussion format allows scheme operators to build large followings through financial commentary and motivational content before pivoting to recruitment pitches. A financial account with tens of thousands of followers can lend false credibility to a pyramid recruitment ask.
X Spaces and direct message groups are also used as recruitment venues — participants are invited to join voice discussions or community chats where the scheme is presented as an exclusive opportunity available only to trusted community members.
How this scam works on X (Twitter)
An X account with a large following and financial commentary posts a thread about 'unlocking income streams' and invites interested users to DM for details. The DM funnel leads to a recruitment pitch for a community fund, gifting circle, or matrix scheme that pays only when new members are recruited.
Operators sometimes use X Spaces events billed as financial education sessions to build an audience that is then recruited at the end of the session. Participants who join and recruit successfully may post income testimonials in threads, perpetuating the recruitment cycle.

Frequently asked questions
Are 'gifting circles' on X legal if everyone participates voluntarily?
No — gifting circles and matrix schemes are a form of pyramid scheme and are illegal in most jurisdictions regardless of voluntary participation. The voluntary nature of entry does not change the scheme's mathematical inevitability of collapse.
