College-related subreddits attract large audiences of students actively researching financial aid options, making them a natural target for scholarship fraud. A post that appears to share a helpful funding discovery in a community dedicated to mutual academic support benefits from an assumption of good intent that would not exist on an anonymous external website.
Moderator bandwidth limits mean that fraudulent posts can remain visible for hours before being identified and removed, and by that point many students may have already submitted applications and fees.
How this scam works on Reddit
A post in a college or scholarship subreddit shares a 'found this amazing scholarship' announcement with a link to an application form. The form collects name, school enrolment details, GPA, and a small application fee. The scholarship foundation name is fictitious. Students who apply receive no response and cannot recover their fee.
Some operations run recurring campaigns — reposting similar fraudulent scholarship announcements under different foundation names across multiple semesters — relying on the constant influx of new students who have not encountered previous iterations of the scam.
DMs to users who post asking for scholarship help offer personalised assistance in finding opportunities, but ultimately direct the student to the same fraudulent application forms.
Common red flags
- Scholarship post is from an account with no other activity in education-related communities
- Award requires an application fee or processing payment
- Foundation name is not findable in any official scholarship database or charity register
- Post is cross-posted to multiple subreddits simultaneously
- Moderators have not engaged with or verified the post
- Subreddit rules prohibit individual scholarship promotion but the post is present anyway
How to protect yourself
- Use only scholarships found through verified databases recommended by your school's financial aid office
- Never pay to apply for a scholarship — legitimate awards have no application fees
- Report suspicious scholarship posts to the subreddit moderators before applying
- Verify any foundation name through official charity or education registries
- Be particularly cautious about scholarships discovered through Reddit DMs rather than public posts
How to report it
- Report the post to subreddit moderators using the report function
- File a complaint with the FTC (US) or your national consumer authority if a fee was paid
- Notify your school's financial aid office so they can warn other students
