SIM swap fraud has been reported in Israel across all major carriers — Cellcom, Partner, Hot Mobile, and Pelephone. Criminals gather personal details through phishing, data breaches, or social engineering and use them to request SIM replacements, hijacking the victim's phone number to intercept OTPs for banking, email, and digital wallets.
Israel's high smartphone banking adoption and widespread use of OTP-based authentication across financial services make a successful SIM swap particularly damaging.
How this scam works on Israel
A fraudster with access to the victim's Israeli ID number and account details contacts the carrier's customer service, claiming a lost or damaged SIM. After the swap, the criminal intercepts OTPs to reset online banking passwords and authorise transfers.
In crypto-targeted variants, the attacker resets the victim's exchange account using SMS verification and immediately moves funds to an external wallet. Israeli crypto holders have suffered significant losses through this method.
Phishing campaigns targeting Israeli users often specifically request national ID numbers and carrier account PINs, providing exactly the data needed to pass a carrier identity check.

Frequently asked questions
How can I add a SIM swap protection PIN to my Israeli carrier account?
Visit your carrier's service centre in person with your Israeli ID to add a verbal PIN that must be quoted for any SIM-related request. This adds an extra layer of friction that stops most socially engineered swaps. Call your carrier's customer service to confirm this option is active.
