Reddit allows users to host free item giveaways, and these posts generate high engagement. Scam operators replicate this format in high-traffic subreddits to collect upvotes that push their posts into featured sections, maximising reach before the fraud is identified. The upvote mechanism creates a feedback loop: more visibility attracts more entries, which signals popularity and attracts even more visibility.
Reddit's direct messaging is used to contact supposed winners privately, making it impossible for other subreddit members to see the follow-up communication and raise concerns before the victim has already complied with requests.
How this scam works on Reddit
A post in a popular subreddit announces a giveaway of a sought-after product — a GPU, console, or gift card — with simple entry requirements such as commenting a word or number. The post collects hundreds of comments. A follow-up DM to apparent winners asks them to verify their address via an external link, which harvests personal data.
Some operations request that winners pay a shipping fee via a non-reversible payment method before the prize is posted. The fee is pocketed and no prize is shipped. Others DM winners with a link claiming to provide a 'redemption code' that actually captures social media login credentials.
Compromised high-karma accounts are also used to post fraudulent giveaways, as the account's established history lends immediate credibility to the announcement.
Common red flags
- Giveaway post was made by an account with limited history in the subreddit
- Prize being offered is exceptionally valuable relative to what legitimate subreddit giveaways typically offer
- DM to apparent winner asks for a shipping fee or external site login
- Post accumulates hundreds of entries very quickly through upvotes that seem inorganic
- Winner selection appears arbitrary with no transparent randomisation method
- Redemption step requires visiting an external site rather than using a platform redemption code
How to protect yourself
- Approach any Reddit giveaway with scepticism proportional to the prize value — high-value giveaways from unverified accounts are almost always fraudulent
- Never pay a shipping fee to claim a prize offered in a Reddit giveaway
- Report suspicious giveaway posts to subreddit moderators before interacting
- Verify the posting account's history across multiple subreddits to assess whether it is a genuine community member
- Do not click links in winner DMs — navigate directly to the relevant platform if a prize code is offered
How to report it
- Report the post to the subreddit's moderators using the report function, specifying it as a giveaway scam
- Report the DM to Reddit admins if it contains a phishing link or payment request
- Alert the subreddit community through a separate post if the fraud is not quickly removed by moderators
