TikTok's duet and stitch features allow any user to attach their content to a popular video, placing their message alongside a creator's existing audience. Scammers use these tools to run giveaway announcements that appear adjacent to genuine content, borrowing the visibility and implicit credibility of the creator being stitched without requiring any direct impersonation.
The for-you page algorithm delivers this content to users who have engaged with related creators, meaning the target audience is already predisposed to trust the source. Viewers who see a giveaway announced through a creator they regularly watch are significantly more likely to click through without verification.
How this scam works on TikTok
A scam account stitches a popular brand's video with an announcement that the brand is giving away products to anyone who follows a specific account and visits a link in the bio. The stitch format makes it appear as a continuation or endorsed response to the original video. The bio link leads to a data-collection form or a site requiring a small entry fee.
Some operations create entirely original videos with high production value, offering trending products as prizes and building a short-term following before announcing winners who must pay shipping to receive their prize. The account is then deleted and recreated for the next campaign.
Comment duets — TikTok's feature allowing responses as split-screen videos — are used to make it appear that a prize is a response to a viewer comment, creating a hyper-personalised winning notification that is difficult to distinguish from genuine creator interaction.
Common red flags
- Stitch or duet giveaway announcement directs viewers to a link not associated with the original creator's account
- Entry requires visiting an external site, following multiple accounts, or providing personal details
- Winning notification via comment duet requests payment for shipping or verification
- Account has very few videos and a high follower count gained very recently
- Original brand or creator has not mentioned the giveaway on their own verified account
- Bio link leads to a site requesting more information than a standard giveaway entry would need
How to protect yourself
- Verify any TikTok giveaway by checking the original creator's own account for independent confirmation
- Never visit external sites or provide personal details to enter a TikTok giveaway
- Refuse any request for payment as part of a prize claim regardless of the amount
- Report stitch and duet accounts that appear to misrepresent giveaway affiliations
- Follow only verified accounts of brands you are interested in for genuine promotional information
How to report it
- Tap the share icon and report the video to TikTok as a scam or misleading content
- Report the account through the profile's report function for running a fraudulent promotion
- Alert the original creator whose content was stitched without consent
Frequently asked questions
Can I trust a TikTok giveaway that appears in my for-you feed from an account I do not follow?
Treat all giveaway content in your for-you feed with scepticism, regardless of how polished it appears. Verify through the original brand's verified account before entering or clicking any link. Legitimate promotions from brands you follow will appear on their own verified profile, not exclusively through third-party accounts.
