Venmo sweepstakes scams are closely related to fake giveaway fraud and travel in the same social media ecosystems where brand-impersonating prize campaigns are common. The casual, social feel of Venmo payment requests aligns naturally with the informal giveaway culture of Instagram and TikTok, where users regularly interact with brand accounts through comments and DMs.
Victims who have genuinely entered competitions online have limited ability to distinguish a fraudulent win notification from a real one, making the initial contact highly effective.
How this scam works on Venmo
A victim receives a DM from what appears to be a brand account congratulating them on winning a sweepstakes. To process the prize, a Venmo payment is needed for 'sweepstakes registration insurance' — a small amount to protect the prize until delivery is confirmed. The amount is small enough to seem proportionate to the prize value.
After the first Venmo payment, the prize operator requests a further sum for customs fees or delivery insurance. The pattern escalates with each new Venmo request framed as the last requirement.
Some scammers blend the Venmo request with a request for personal information — home address for prize delivery, phone number for courier tracking — harvesting data alongside the financial fraud.
Common red flags
- Brand or sweepstakes account contacts you by DM and requests a Venmo fee to process your win
- Account has low verified engagement or was recently created despite appearing to represent a major brand
- Fee requests escalate after each Venmo payment
- Personal data is requested alongside the fee payment
- Prize value is implausibly large for the apparent scale of the competition
- You are asked to keep the win confidential until fees are fully cleared
How to protect yourself
- Legitimate sweepstakes operators never charge winners any fees before delivering prizes
- Verify the giveaway by visiting the brand's official website directly and checking their newsroom or promotions page
- Report the fraudulent Venmo account to Venmo support
- Report the social media account to the platform's impersonation reporting tool
- Do not provide your home address or personal details to unverified DMs
- Share your experience publicly to warn others following the same brand account
How to report it
- Report the Venmo payment request through the app's reporting tool
- Report the impersonating social account to the platform

Frequently asked questions
What does a real brand sweepstakes win notification look like?
Genuine prize notifications from brands will come from a verified official account and direct you to a claim process on the brand's actual website. They will not request Venmo fees, and any applicable taxes on large prizes will be handled through official tax documentation after the prize is awarded — never as an upfront payment.
