Task Scams on Signal
Signal's reputation for privacy and security is exploited by task scammers who frame the app as proof of their operation's legitimacy, recruiting victims via WhatsApp before migrating them to Signal for tighter control.

Task scammers use Signal as a secondary platform after initiating contact on WhatsApp or Telegram. The migration to Signal is often presented as a security upgrade for the victim's protection, lending the scam an air of professional legitimacy. Signal's end-to-end encryption and disappearing message features also give scammers more operational security than open platforms.
The 'Signal = secure and legitimate' assumption is a social engineering tool. Victims who would be suspicious of a WhatsApp-based job offer may feel more comfortable once moved to a platform associated with privacy advocates and journalists.
How this scam works on Signal
Initial contact occurs on WhatsApp, Telegram, or a dating app. Once a victim expresses interest in the task opportunity, the recruiter asks to move to Signal 'for privacy.' The task platform itself is a web or app-based system linked via Signal messages.
Task instructions, daily earnings updates, and 'team manager' contact all come through Signal. The disappearing message feature may be enabled, which removes evidence of promises made and instructions given. When deposit demands arise, they are communicated via Signal voice messages or encrypted text that leaves little record.
Signal groups mirror the fake community dynamics seen on WhatsApp and Telegram — multiple accounts posting earnings screenshots and encouraging new members to deposit for the next task tier.

How to protect yourself
- Be suspicious of any job or task opportunity that requires migrating to Signal
- Recognise that privacy apps can be used by scammers for operational security, not just to protect you
- Screenshot all conversations from any platform before messages expire
- Never pay to join or upgrade within a task platform regardless of the communication channel
- Discuss the opportunity with a trusted friend before making any payment
How to report it
- Screenshot conversations before they expire and preserve them as evidence
- Report to your national fraud reporting service with the screenshots
- Report to local police with a record of any funds sent
Frequently asked questions
Does using Signal make a job offer more legitimate?
No. Signal is a communication tool and scammers actively choose it because its privacy features limit evidence and its trusted reputation lowers victim suspicion. The platform used to communicate says nothing about the legitimacy of the opportunity.
