Vehicle Escrow Scams via Revolut
How fake vehicle escrow services in Europe direct buyers to Revolut transfers as the payment rail for fraudulent purchase-protection schemes.

As Revolut has grown to tens of millions of users across Europe, fraudulent vehicle escrow schemes have adapted to use it as their payment collection method. The escrow framing is the same — buyer sends funds to a 'safe holding account' before vehicle delivery — but the payment instruction is now a Revolut.me link or a Revolut bank transfer rather than a wire.
The Revolut interface adds credibility in European markets because buyers associate it with modern, trustworthy fintech rather than the old-fashioned wire transfer model that has become synonymous with fraud.
How this scam works on Revolut
Fake vehicle listings appear on AutoTrader UK, Facebook Marketplace, or eBay Motors. The seller recommends an escrow service for 'buyer protection' and provides a Revolut payment link or account details. The escrow company's branding looks like a legitimate fintech operation.
After the buyer sends the vehicle price via Revolut, the escrow company issues a fake confirmation and a bogus shipping tracking number. Both the seller and the escrow company then become unreachable within days.
Some variants use the Revolut Money Pool feature, framing it as a neutral escrow holding mechanism — but Money Pools are controlled entirely by the creator and can be withdrawn at any time.
Common red flags
- A vehicle seller recommending a specific Revolut-based escrow service
- The escrow Revolut account is a personal account or Money Pool, not a regulated custodial account
- Vehicle priced below market with a hard-to-verify backstory
- Escrow website registered recently with no prior trading history
- Revolut.me link provided directly by the seller for escrow payment
- Pressure to complete payment quickly before another buyer takes the vehicle
How to protect yourself
- Choose any escrow service independently; never use the seller's recommendation
- Revolut personal accounts and Money Pools are not regulated escrow — do not use them as such
- Verify vehicle listings through official DVLA records (UK) or equivalent national registry
- Report fraudulent escrow sites and Revolut accounts to Revolut support and Action Fraud
- Contact your bank immediately if a Revolut transfer was made under fraudulent pretences
How to report it
- Report to Revolut fraud team via in-app support or [email protected]
- Report to Action Fraud at actionfraud.police.uk (UK)
- Report the vehicle listing to the platform's fraud team
Frequently asked questions
Does DVLA or any EU registry help verify whether a vehicle actually exists before purchase?
In the UK, you can check a vehicle's MOT history, tax status, and some ownership details via gov.uk/check-mot-history using the registration number. This confirms the vehicle exists and is registered. However, it does not confirm the seller actually has possession of it — which is why in-person inspection remains essential before any payment, regardless of escrow arrangements.
